Hasso Plattner Foundation announces major HIV/AIDS grant

Dr Hasso Plattner, co-founder of SAP and chairman of the company's supervisory board, announced the establishment of the foundation "Isombululo", an HIV/AIDS education and prevention programme that will bring together South Africa's two premier universities, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of Cape Town.

Cabinet today, in principle, approved the Operational Plan for Comprehensive Treatment and Care for HIV and AIDS, which it had, on 8 August this year, requested the Department of Health to prepare. Amongst other things, the Plan provides for Anti-retroviral Treatment in the public health sector, as part of the government's comprehensive strategy to combat HIV and AIDS.

The global AIDS epidemic shows no signs of abating. Five million people became infected with HIV worldwide and 3 million died this year alone the highest ever. The findings are featured in AIDS Epidemic Update 2003, a comprehensive new report on the global HIV/AIDS epidemic issued today (25 November 2003) by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in advance of World AIDS Day, commemorated on 1 December.

It's hardly imaginable that a middle-aged woman with no income can feed 92 orphans in rural Mpumalanga and still care for six of her own children. But without the hard work and support of her husband she wouldn't be able to do it.

Former president Nelson Mandela will be in Cape Town to mark World AIDS Day this year and will be at the launch of South Africa's first public-private HIV/AIDS treatment site.

The theme for World AIDS Day 2003 is "Live and Let Live" - a concept aimed at focusing attention on the deep stigma and rampant discrimination which is fuelling the pandemic in relationships of all kinds: partnerships, families, communities and workplaces across the globe. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan was quoted this week as saying that the world is losing the struggle against HIV/AIDS, with infection rates climbing on key continents and social decimation resulting from widespread illness and death.

The first thing that strikes you about Bulelwa Mabe is her broad smile and zest for life. It is hard to believe that a year ago the mother-of-two wanted to throw herself under a train to end her life when doctors told her that she and her baby daughter had tested HIV-positive. Bulelwa, 35, from Khayelitsha, is one of the estimated five million South Africans who live with HIV/AIDS.
