Lifetime achievement award

Academic, scientist and human rights activist, Professor Hoosen Coovadia was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in India in March for his invaluable contribution towards clinical practice and medical education. The award was presented by the 2006 HIV congress in Mumbai.

Often lauded as the future of this country and indeed most others, the youth have been etched into our minds as our saviours and leaders in our dotage. But why is there so little emphasis on those who brought the youth into our world? There is no doubting this inevitability, but surely, as it is an indisputable fact that this social positioning of the youth has led to what can only be described as a dereliction of duty to the very people who have nurtured them.

Women who take single-dose nevirapine to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV may not, after all, be jeopardising their own treatment options. here had been concerns that resistance to nevirapine would develop and limit future treatment options if short-course therapy with the drug was used during pregnancy.
