Mavis Samuels is part of the uMephi project (Zulu for 'To take shame away'), a national programme that searches for adoptive or foster parents for abandoned babies, many of whom are HIV-positive and have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

More than 4 000 South African teachers died of HIV/AIDS-related complications last year, while 45 000 more - 12,7 percent of the teacher workforce - are HIV-positive.

The Mpondombili Project is a school-based project developed and implemented in Hlabisa in rural KwaZulu Natal. The project was carried out with the aim of promoting “dual protection? to reduce young people’s risk of becoming infected with HIV. Dual protection refers to the simultaneous protection from unwanted pregnancy and HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. The programme also aimed to change gender role norms and gender dynamics within relationships.

Illnesses such as HIV/AIDS have also had an impact on the criminal justice system. This year, there have been four cases of prisoners who died of terminal illness shortly before they were due to be sentenced by the Johannesburg High Court.

Thousands of teachers have been lost to HIV/AIDS. An HSRC study has revealed the extent of the epidemic among educators and has called for 10 000 to be placed on anti-retroviral treatment with immediate effect.

A group of eight South African and international NGOs are collaborating on a new programme to tackle the impact of HIV/AIDS on the education sector, after recent research showed that the pandemic was claiming the lives of 11 teachers daily.

The Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa’s (COHSASA) pilot programmes for the holistic management of HIV/AIDS services within a district are nearing completion. This initiative is being executed in collaboration with the National Department of Health (NDOH) and provincial authorities, and has the financial backing of the German Society for Technical Co-operation – Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH.

HIV/AIDS will kill 20 percent of southern Africa's agricultural workers by 2020, researchers said on Thursday, possibly threatening food production in a region already facing frequent shortages.
