This World AIDS Day, the evidence again shows a growing epidemic. In hard-hit regions, AIDS threatens the very fabric of society and life expectancy is plummeting. In those regions where HIV is still relatively new, especially Eastern Europe and much of Asia, the epidemic is expanding fastest of all.

In KwaZulu-Natal alone, 1.8 million people are HIV-positive, a figure equivalent to 30 packed rugby stadiums. Of those, an estimated 180 000 require treatment immediately to save their lives. Most will die well before the national treatment roll-out begins.

Much progress has been made in the fight against HIV/AIDS since last year, Deputy President Jacob Zuma said at a World AIDS Day commemoration gathering.


WHO unveils ARV treatment plan

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday unveiled a concrete plan to treat three million AIDS patients with antiretrovirals by 2005 ("3 by 5").

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education and Culture has committed R26,6 million from a National Conditional Grant to the fight against HIV/AIDS. More than a million people have been reached at workshops and other events and more than 20 000 - educators as well as learners - have had specialised training.

A very special baby shower

Members and friends of the Manning Road Methodist Church in Durban, KZN, put their heads, hands and hearts together to devise a novel way of honouring World AIDS Day 2003. They held a "Baby Shower for Mary", to which gift-givers brought toys, baby clothing and infant preparations for donation to the iThemba Lethu Transition Home and the Ekuphileni ante-natal Clinic in Cato Manor, Durban.
