Drugs protect breast-fed babies - study

Results of the first study to demonstrate protection in newborn infants against HIV transmission from breastfeeding by their HIV-positive mothers show a dramatically lowered risk of HIV transmission to babies taking either of two drugs during the entire breast-feeding period.

Tesfagabir Tesfu did not set out to become involved with HIV/AIDS pre- and post-test counselling when he came to the University of KwaZulu-Natal€™s Durban campus from Eritrea nearly 18 months ago. He had been a reporter in his country€™s Ministry of Information for over two years after graduating with a BA in English, when his employers offered him a bursary to study for a Master€™s degree in €œHealth Promotion through Entertainment-Education€ at UND€™s Centre for Culture, Communication and Media Studies.


TAC to provide anti-retrovirals in Western Cape and Kwazulu-Natal

The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) plans to provide anti-retroviral medicine to HIV-positive people in KwaZulu-Natal, but has warned the government not to shirk its responsibility to save lives.

Three teenage girls from a local high school in Johannesburg, South Africa's economic hub, were gathered in a local NGO office on Wednesday after watching an educational play on HIV/AIDS. The topic of discussion had generated a heated debate among the girls, and they were eager to share their thoughts on "sugar daddies".
