The Columbia University-Southern Africa AIDS & TB International Training and Research Programme is funded by the Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health, USA. This programme, now in its thirteenth year of existence, offers a unique, prestigious and challenging training opportunity to promising researchers early in their careers, in the fields of basic science, epidemiology, social science and bioethics related to HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis. Only citizens of South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland are eligible.

International Epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IEDEA) - NIAID

Applications are being sought for the establishment of the International Epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IEDEA) consortium, a collaborative group of international regional data centers, for the compilation of data to address research questions in HIV/AIDS that are not possible to answer with currently existing individual cohorts, one of which will serve as the coordinating center; development of regional, generalizable datasets that represent study populations based on data from different settings and populations; and development of procedures and approaches to allow regions to more accurately address and monitor the HIV epidemic within their populations.

Southern Africa Development Marketplace awards nearly USD 400,000 to innovative HIV/AIDS proposals

The Parktonian Hotel in Johannesburg buzzed with excitement and anticipation June 1-3 as the World Bank hosted its first regional development marketplace in southern Africa. The theme HIV/AIDS: Turning Ideas into Action galvanized some 300 organizations from Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland to submit proposals. An independent assessment panel comprised of civil society, academia, government and the private sector scrutinized the proposals in two separate rounds. A total of 38 proposals went into the final round and representatives of these organizations attended the event, along with others who participated in the Knowledge Exchange.
