“I am used to the idea that my mum is living with HIV. I don’t have a problem with it now, unlike when I heard it for the first time. I always think about the day when my mum called us and told us about the fact that she was HIV-positive. My mum was sick. She was in and out from hospital. She phoned my father and told him she was going to be tested for HIV and the test came back positive. I heard my father saying to my mum: ‘Unengculaza!’ [You’ve got AIDS!]?


Education fundraiser to benefit orphans of HIV/AIDS

A new fundraising campaign launched by former South African president Nelson Mandela will help orphans of HIV/AIDS in six African countries by creating "child-friendly schools", the South African Press Association has reported.

Former president Nelson Mandela, one of Africa's most committed campaigners in the battle against HIV/AIDS, announced that his only surviving son had succumbed to the disease on Thursday.

International pop star Elton John jetted into Durban yesterday (10 January 2005), not as a glittering celebrity, but to give hands-on support to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

The Anglican Church has announced plans to launch a US $10 million HIV/AIDS education initiative in southern Africa, the South African Press Association reported.

Fiona Kirkwood, an artist and cultural activist in the field of HIV/AIDS since 1998, developed the workpiece "Survival" to create awareness and offer solutions to the overwhelming HIV/AIDS issue, which has particular relevance to KwaZulu- Natal. This artwork was recently installed at The Workshop shopping centre in Durban.
