The HIV/AIDS Research Group at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg, in collaboration with the Health Systems Trust, is currently researching voluntary counselling and testing in Africa, and conducting a national study of VCT services in South Africa. The general aim of this project is to provide an audit of the current status of VCT in South Africa such that recommendations to further inform VCT implementation at a national level can be made.

Scientists are more optimistic now than ever before about developing an AIDS vaccine in Africa, according to Medical Research Council (MRC) chairperson Malegapuru Makgoba.

The Children's Institute (UCT) is conducting research in South Africa on the identification, monitoring and support of children who have been orphaned or who are at risk of being orphaned. Very broadly, the research relates to the question of how such children are identified and, once identified, are monitored and supported by the various services in their community.
