There are many occasions during the course of the year to pronounce about the pandemic. On the occasion of this World AIDS Day, I’d like to resist the temptation to run with hyperbole. Rather, I’d like to put two specific proposals which may seem obvious, but which speak, I believe, to the heart of the struggle against the virus.

Reaching the old and disabled

Despite being severely disabled, Goodman Vilakazi of Orange Farm has set up a literacy project to help the old and disabled in his community, and part of their syllabus is to about HIV/AIDS.

Sam is an orphan who now looks after younger orphans. Sam, a short 17-year-old with a shiny face, has been a childcare worker for the past year, taking care of orphans and children from very poor homes.

Africa’s leading forum for discussion of HIV developments and trends on the continent, the 14th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA), opened on 4 December in Abuja. Speaking at the opening ceremony, UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot underlined the priority to ensure that funds are available to those who need it.

On 27 November and 4 December, SAfm, in conjunction with the Media Monitoring Project (MMP), several other NGOs and Government, broadcast South Africa's first live conference on radio, on the topic of Media and Minors -- how children are perceived by all the media and particularly how the more sensitive and contentious issues are handled. Jeremy Maggs facilitated these discussions.

Private sector makes HIV/AIDS its business

After years of failing to mount an adequate response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, African businesses are finally getting their house in order. The Pan African Business Coalition (PABC) was launched on Monday during the 14th International Conference on HIV/AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) in Abuja, Nigeria, and is expected to mobilise the private sector to adopt more effective HIV/AIDS programmes.
