August 2003's Journal Club session featured a presentation by Dr Pranitha Maharaj of the University of KwaZulu-Natal's School of Development Studies, who, with Professor John Cleland, has authored a paper entitled "The Quiet Revolution: Condom Use within Marriage", featuring new research into condom use by married and co-habiting partners in KZN's rural and urban settings.

UNAIDS welcomes the decision of the South African Government to provide antiretroviral treatment on a national scale to people living with HIV/AIDS in the country. The new South African national initiative will make that country's fight against HIV/AIDS truly comprehensive, with treatment complementing prevention efforts. Its implementation will bring hope for millions of people living with HIV, and their families.

On the 7th August 2003 the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria announced that the funds allocated to the Enhancing Care Initiative, KwaZulu-Natal have finally been approved and signed by the South African Government.

After getting the long awaited go-ahead from cabinet to start a national antiretoviral (ARV) programme, South Africa's health department is now faced with the daunting challenge of drawing up a strategy for distributing the anti-AIDS drugs to the millions of people who need them.

HIV/AIDS, trade-distorting subsidies and regional food security will feature high on the agenda of the upcoming meetings of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in the Tanzanian commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, SADC Executive Secretary Dr Prega Ramsamy said on Tuesday.
