A total of R12-billion is budgeted for a roll-out of anti-retrovirals over the next few years and the cabinet is expected to announce the details on Wednesday afternoon, Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said.

South Africa ushered in a milestone event in the history of HIV/AIDS this week when the first of two human clinical trials of an HIV vaccine started in Durban and Johannesburg. Recent studies have shown that the efficacy of a vaccine can vary between men and women and so there has been a special effort to enrol equal numbers of both sexes for the trials.

IAVI begins HIV/AIDS vaccine trials in South Africa and Switzerland

The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) today (12 November 2003) began human trials in South Africa and Switzerland to test HIVA.MVA, a candidate vaccine to prevent people uninfected with HIV/AIDS from contracting the disease. This brings to five the number of countries where this vaccine candidate currently is in trials.
