The HIV and AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Strategic Plan for South Africa 2007-2011 flows from the National Strategic Plan (NSP) of 2000-2005 as well as the Operational Plan for Comprehensive HIV and AIDS Care, Management and Treatment. It represents the countrys multi-sectoral response to the challenge with HIV infection and the wide-ranging impacts of AIDS.

Young people face severe sexual and reproductive health problems. Rights for young people are a matter of life and death. Young people make up the majority of the worlds population. But still they lack the right to crucial reproductive and sexual health services and information. Consequently, too many youth become infected with HIV infections; young women die unnecessary as a result of pregnancy complications. It is time to turn this tide!

Behaviour change has been widely identified as the key to reducing new HIV infections, but so far neither governments, religious leaders nor AIDS organisations have had significant success in convincing large numbers of people to change their risky sexual behaviour.

Progress in developing an effective anti-HIV microbicide was dealt a major blow this week when researchers halted trials of a microbicide gel after preliminary results showed it could increase the risk of HIV infection.
