Arusha to Durban AIDS Cycle Relay

Am AIDS Cycle Relay will begin in Arusha, Tanzania on 22 August 2002 and end in Durban on 21 September. The aim is to get people talking openly about the issues surrounding AIDS.

It was fitting that the first plenary of AIDS2002 should be the second Jonathan Mann memorial lecture, powerfully delivered by Irene Fernandez of Malaysia. Fernandez needed special permission to leave Malaysia, and has been facing criminal indictment since 1996 for her work as a human rights activist. She is currently director of Tenaganita, an NGO campaigning for the rights of women and migrant workers.

The main measures of the stage of HIV infection are the CD4 cell count, the viral load (VL) and the clinical picture. It is on these that the strategies for commencement of antiretroviral therapy (ART) are based. But one has to take other factors into account as well.

Three themes dominated the XIV International AIDS Conference in Barcelona this week: treatment, funding and the impact of the epidemic on women. The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Carol Bellamy told the Conference that AIDS had a human face, and it was that of a young woman. Figures show that AIDS disproportionately affects women, especially in Africa.
