The South African Police Union, which has 11 000 members in KwaZulu-Natal, says service delivery to the public could be severely curtailed because of the current epidemic of HIV and AIDS in the province.

The HIV/AIDS pandemic has become a woman's disease that will require tremendous efforts from African governments in order to see a breakthrough, UN special envoy for AIDS, Stephen Lewis said on Monday (5 August 2002). He said that gender inequality had become lethal because women's rights to equality, respect and derogatory sexual advances from men have been ignored for several years.

The Anglo American Corporation, which this week announced a bold plan to provide anti-retrovirals to HIV-positive employees, has appealed to the government to roll out its own programme of treatment to help the plan succeed.

Gauteng has developed its primary health care infrastructure to provide comprehensive HIV/AIDS care, according to an overall AIDS Care Strategy. This AIDS Care Strategy was reviewed and endorsed by outside experts in 2001 and 2002.


Summit to shape SA government HIV/AIDS policy

Scientists and academics are meeting with government this week in a groundbreaking HIV/AIDS Summit expected to help shape state policy. The two-day Summit in Johannesburg is to be followed by another meeting to discuss plans for universal access to anti-retroviral drugs. This is the first time that all these parties have met in a dedicated forum to review scientific issues relating to HIV/AIDS in the country.
