he South African government has agreed to respect a High Court ruling compelling it to provide antiretroviral (ARV) treatment to inmates at Westville Prison in the port city of Durban.

It started with three South African grandmothers sharing their grief at the loss of their children and supporting each other to care for their orphaned grandchildren. Five years later, their group in Alexandra, a Johannesburg township, has grown to 40 and spawned dozens of others spanning two continents, sparking what some are calling a 'granny revolution'.

Using illustrations of South African Sign Language instead of speech bubbles, a new comic book is reaching out to the deaf community with messages about HIV and AIDS, sexual violence and sexual rights.

FATIMA, who lives in western Tanzania near Lake Tanganyika, has been suffering for more than a month from a dry, hacking cough. She trembles to think that it might mean she has tuberculosis. Fatima knows that she can find out and, if necessary, receive treatment at the nearest health clinic, a one-hour bus ride away.

The iThemba Lethu home for orphans of HIV/AIDS had a special visit from renowned musician, singer, com-poser and movie producer, Quincy Jones who was part of a delegation to visit United Nations International Childrens Emergency Fund (UNICEF) funded projects.

ON Thursday 25 May the University of KwaZulu-Natal participated for the first time in International Candle Light Day, a day set aside to highlight the impact of HIV/AiDS on the global society. It also honours the memory of those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS.

Newly appointed Director of the Africa Centre for Health and Populations Studies Professor Marie-Louise Newell is an international expert with a wealth of experience on methodological issues in epidemiological research, the epidemiology of paediatric HIV infections, mother-to-child transmission and interventions to reduce mother-to-child transmission.

UKZN Postgraduate Medical Bio-chemistry student Leshern Karamchand, 24, will be under-taking a three-month HIV Pilot Project in Canada. He has received a scholarship from the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) and will be based at the University of Guelph in Ontario as part of an exchange programme facilitated by UKZNs International Office.

The thirty six students studying at UKZN for a Masters in Theology with a special focus on HIV/AIDS met for a week long Colloquium in Stellenbosch, where they participated in a peer review of their research on a variety of topics.
