Thousands of young people fresh out of school are about to enter a whole new world of campus life, with lots of partying and a lethal cocktail of sex, drugs, booze - and HIV. The danger is that even if students know the dangers of contracting HIV through unprotected sex, consuming alcohol or drugs could reduce their inhibitions and cloud their judgement.

The government's much anticipated Operational Plan for Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment, which provides for the rollout of antiretrovirals, was presented to Parliament's portfolio committee on health on Tuesday.

February has been a busy month in the FBO sector, with a number of conferences, workshops and book launches. The PACSA (Pietermaritzburg Agency for Christian Social Awareness) Conference on HIV/AIDS, Gender and Poverty took place on 17 – 18th February. The conference gave voice to community-based practitioners, highlighted best practices, worked through challenges and called for a deeper commitment from Church and Government to the needs of those affect and infected in the province. A clear call was sounded to the Church to take a stand for HIV/AIDS.

Pity the person with AIDS who is trying to find out where to go for anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment or how long it will take for the drugs to be available. The Mail & Guardian’s attempts for the past month to obtain concrete information from each province suggest that public access to the life-prolonging drugs will be akin to a lottery and will depend on where you live.

Mobile clinics for sex workers in Johannesburg's inner-city suburb of Hillbrow have had a positive impact on encouraging women to seek health care, according to research just released in South Africa.

A Capacity-building and Leadership Workshop was held from 16 to 18 February 2004 at the Tropicana Hotel in Durban. Co-hosted by the World Conference of Religion and Peace (WCRP) and the Islamic Medical Association (IMA), Southern African Forum Partners from Durban, Johannesburg, Port Shepstone, Namibia and Cape Town attended the workshop.
