HIVAN Release.
Sponsored by a five year training and research grant from the National Institutes for Health (NIH), USA, and in partnership with the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, HIVAN has scheduled the second in a series of annual training courses on Ethnographic research methods in the Social Sciences for August 2004. The course will deal with current conceptual debates and methodological issues in Ethnography, the relationship of Ethnography to other research methods, and will have a specific focus on using and developing Ethnography in HIV/AIDS research in southern Africa.

Eleven of HIVANs staff members will be jetting off to Bangkok, Thailand to participate in and present at the XV International AIDS Conference, during July 2004. The staff complement will be participating in the proceedings in a variety of ways: 10 poster presentations, 1 oral presentation, 1 film screening and an NGO booth. Professor Jerry Coovadia, HIVANs Director: BioMedical Sciences, will be attending as a representative of Africa for the general council of the International AIDS Conference.

With the aim of reaching the thousands of health care workers in developing countries who do not have ready access to the Internet, a CD-ROM containing the latest information on HIV/AIDS will be disseminated to the 19,000 delegates attending the International AIDS Conference in Bangkok in July.

HIV-positive mothers who breastfeed their infants for the first six months of life lower the chance of transmitting the virus, compared to mothers who mix-feed their babies.
