The R800-million which was awarded to KwaZulu-Natal by the United Nations global fund to fight HIV./AIDS and is now the subject of a dispute, must be given to the province, said HIV/AIDS expert Alan Whiteside.

An interim report on the remonitoring of the Ugandan trial of the anti-retroviral Nevirapine for use in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS has revealed no irregularities in documentation at the trial site.

With tens of thousands of children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, the strain on caregivers is enormous. The Orphans of AIDS Trust Fund, which was initiated by Independent Newspapers, aims to assist organisations looking after the children - but the caregivers also need help.

Health Minister Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang yesterday put the cat among the pigeons by announcing that the proposal from Kwazulu-Natal for R800 million from the United Nations Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS has been returned to South Africa for consideration by the South African National AIDS Advisory Council (SANAC).
