Interim ECI KZN Management Team Press Release. 08 August 2003.
|
On the 7th August 2003 the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria announced that the funds allocated to the Enhancing Care Initiative, KwaZulu-Natal have finally been approved and signed by the South African Government.
The ECI KZN team, led by the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine and the Department of Health in KwaZulu-Natal, will be a key stakeholder in the implementation of the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria proposal.
This proposal was submitted on behalf of the partnership, which also includes the Private Sector and NGO/CBO groups in KwaZulu-Natal. The University of KwaZulu-Natal, and in particular, the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine will play a critical role in providing expertise and training in these comprehensive programs.
This program represents the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine?s responsibility to our community at a time of health crisis, and one of the first of this scale. It is also one of the few horizontal programs intended to bring departments and stakeholders together to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic collectedly, strengthening collaborative partnerships with the Department of Health, the Private Sector and all NGO/CBO partners, as well as other University Programs.
Rarely has a program been so widely covered by the local and international media, affording the University of KwaZulu-Natal great opportunities and challenges, which we hope will be embraced to the fullest.
The Enhancing Care Initiative KwaZulu-Natal team at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine would like to thank the Vice-Chancellor and all other members of staff for their continued support and patience through a difficult time, and look forward to eager and active participation of the Faculty and University in successfully implementing the ECI KZN GFATM programs and its operational research activities, which includes the provision of antiretrovirals.
