South Africa has made progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS - Jacob Zuma

Much progress has been made in the fight against HIV/AIDS since last year, Deputy President Jacob Zuma said at a World AIDS Day commemoration gathering.

"The disease is still affecting us in many ways, but the unity of purpose in combating it and assisting those affected is encouraging and gives us all hope," Zuma said.

"We have always emphasised that combating HIV/AIDS is the responsibility of every South African and every sector."

Zuma saluted former president Nelson Mandela for his efforts in raising awareness of the disease.

"His mobilisation of the international community, as happened with the 46664 weekend concert in Cape Town, makes us continue to admire him for his selflessness and his resolve to seek to improve the lives of others."

Zuma said raised awareness levels had resulted in more people taking responsibility for their actions.

"We are also encouraged that there is now more openness about the disease, which creates a better environment for prevention work, as well as dealing with the impact of the epidemic in our communities."

He said men had to be singled out for playing an important role in the fight against HIV/AIDS. "The government's biggest HIV/AIDS communications campaign, Khomanani, has targeted men as one of the foundations of family and society."

He said it was important that men adhered to the message of preventing HIV/AIDS and took responsibility.

"Due to our patriarchal history, some women are unable to negotiate precautionary measures in relationships, putting them at risk."
