Dr Hasso Plattner, co-founder of SAP and chairman of the company's supervisory board, announced the establishment of the foundation "Isombululo", an HIV/AIDS education and prevention programme that will bring together South Africa's two premier universities, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of Cape Town.
Dr Plattner announced the grant of 6 million Euros to finance Isombululo, a Xhosa word meaning "solution" this morning at the Presidents Cup, one of the worlds leading international golf tournaments.
Professor Malegapuru Makgoba, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of KwaZulu-Natal who was present at the announcement said that the grant brought "together the best expertise in HIV/AIDS of the two leading institutions in the country and was complemented by the partnership with the provincial Department of Health in the Western Cape. We are deeply privileged and honoured to have received such an unrestricted donation to find solutions for such a major health priority. I firmly believe that the establishment of Isombululo and the investment by Dr Plattner and his family would make a difference to the health of the people in the south Cape region and would serve as a model for our country, the African continent and the rest of the world."
Academics at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine are widely recognised for their research in HIV/AIDS, said Professor Barry Kistnasamy, Dean of the Medical School. "I have total confidence in Professor Jerry Coovadia, a highly respected academic and scientist, who will lead the programme on behalf of the University of KwaZulu-Natal."
Professor Makgoba said that this investment by the Hasso Plattner Foundation demonstrated confidence in the new University of KwaZulu-Natal. |
