Description: Cell-Life is set upas a collaborative research project of the University of Cape Town (UCT) and thhe Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), investigating and developing information and communication technology (ICT) tools to support Antiretroviral Treatment (ART) in the public health sector of South Africa. The technology developed by Cell LIfe supports the actual treatment by using a cellular phone, equiped with sophisticated application software. The purpose of the cellphone is to provide a menu based, real time system to capture treatment relevent data from the patient, such as symptoms, drug adherence and other socio economic factors. This information is instantly and directly logged to a central database, which is acceible by the clinic used for management and monitoring of patients. Accessing this database, doctor, nurses and health care workers are able to monitor more patients than before, and hence increase effectiveness as well as effeciency by bridging capacity limitations and infrastructure shortages. In addition, the Cell Life system supports pharmacies in ART drug dispensing supply chain management (to manage stock levels of local pharmacies in ART drugs) and supportsd the management of large scale VCT (Voluntary Counselling and Testing) for HIV/AIDS.
