A total of R12-billion is budgeted for a roll-out of anti-retrovirals over the next few years and the cabinet is expected to announce the details on Wednesday afternoon, Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said.

Cabinet today, in principle, approved the Operational Plan for Comprehensive Treatment and Care for HIV and AIDS, which it had, on 8 August this year, requested the Department of Health to prepare. Amongst other things, the Plan provides for Anti-retroviral Treatment in the public health sector, as part of the government's comprehensive strategy to combat HIV and AIDS.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education and Culture has committed R26,6 million from a National Conditional Grant to the fight against HIV/AIDS. More than a million people have been reached at workshops and other events and more than 20 000 - educators as well as learners - have had specialised training.
