The South African Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has announced plans to undertake a survey of HIV prevalence in the nation's 240 prisons.

The health department of South Africa's Gauteng province has allocated US$814,000 to HIV/AIDS for the 2006/07 financial year, which started in March.

New HIV/AIDS figures released by the South African Department of Health show that the pandemic could be stabilising, with not much change in HIV infection rates between 2004 and 2005.

he South African government has agreed to respect a High Court ruling compelling it to provide antiretroviral (ARV) treatment to inmates at Westville Prison in the port city of Durban.
