Gauteng HIV/AIDS budget almost doubled

06 June 2006. IRIN PlusNews. Republished courtesy of IRIN PlusNews.
The health department of South Africa's Gauteng province has allocated US$814,000 to HIV/AIDS for the 2006/07 financial year, which started in March.

According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation, this was a 47 percent increase from last year's allocation.

During his presentation of the $1.5 billion health budget to the provincial legislature in Johannesburg, Gauteng health minister Brian Hlongwa noted that 41,000 people were currently receiving anti-AIDS treatment at public health facilities.

Hlongwa said his department planned to increase this number to 60,000 by the end of the year.
