South Africa's National HIV/AIDS Programme received a boost on Thursday with the signing of an agreement between the government and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB) and Malaria, committing US $41 million to the country over two years.

The cabinet is set to adopt the report of the joint task team on enhanced anti-retroviral treatment on Friday and will most likely decide on the phased release of the drugs at pilot public healthcare facilities.

Government is committed to developing a comprehensive response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, based on the premise that HIV causes AIDS, and that there is currently no known cure for AIDS. International best practice indicates the need for a comprehensive national programme, embracing preventive strategies, good quality medical treatment and strong support. Government in particular sees the fight against HIV/AIDS as being anchored in a multi-pronged developmental intervention, in which the fight against poverty and underdevelopment are central.

After getting the long awaited go-ahead from cabinet to start a national antiretoviral (ARV) programme, South Africa's health department is now faced with the daunting challenge of drawing up a strategy for distributing the anti-AIDS drugs to the millions of people who need them.
