Africas leading forum for discussion of HIV developments and trends on the continent, the 14th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA), opened on 4 December in Abuja. Speaking at the opening ceremony, UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot underlined the priority to ensure that funds are available to those who need it.

The Nelson Mandela Foundations 46664 Campaign brings together artists, media and businesses to educate people about HIV/AIDS. Mr Mandela gave his prison number to this campaign to remind us that the millions of people infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS are more than just numbers and statistics.

MMP and SAfm present radio conference on the media and child abuse - Media and Minors

On 27 November and 4 December, SAfm, in conjunction with the Media Monitoring Project (MMP), several other NGOs and Government, broadcast South Africa's first live conference on radio, on the topic of Media and Minors -- how children are perceived by all the media and particularly how the more sensitive and contentious issues are handled. Jeremy Maggs facilitated these discussions.

I am seldom invited to be the upbeat speaker at conferences of this sort. Or of any sort, now that I think of it. But when I was asked to address the case for optimism in our struggle to improve the health of the worlds poorest, I couldnt in good conscience refuse. There are reasons for hope.

Young People We Care! (YPWC), a programme managed by John Snow International Europe (JSI Europe) in Zimbabwe, was set up to assist both home-based care organisations and youth groups to train young people, both in school and out of school to provide support to children and adults affected by HIV and AIDS.
