More than a decade after it was identified as a global health emergency, tuberculosis (TB) continues to kill approximately two million people each year. The Stop TB Partnership has declared March 24 th, 2006 "World TB Day" to mobilize support and raise awareness about TB/HIV as a global health issues.

There is a growing demand for AIDS antiretroviral (ARV) treatment amongst people living with HIV and AIDS in South Africa. Guidelines and procedural arrangements have been developed at national and provincial levels to accelerate the rollout of ARV treatment in the public sector.

According to new data in the UNAIDS 2006 Report on the global HIV/AIDS epidemic the HIV/AIDS epidemic appears to be slowing down globally, but new infections are continuing to increase in certain regions and countries.
