The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA), a Non-Governmental Organisation in the health sector has today (13 August 2004) released a multilingual manual on symptom management for people living with HIV/AIDS.

HIVAN (Centre for HIV/AIDS Networking) is a research, networking and advocacy organisation attached to the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. HIVAN is convening a two-day forum on the 26th and 27th of November 2004 in Durban and will present various in-house projects which link biomedical and social science research with practice. Other researchers across multiple disciplines in the field of childhood studies and HIV/AIDS are invited to share this platform to present their work. The Forum will be open to both academics and practitioners.

Village for orphans of HIV/AIDS planned

An organisation in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province plans to build a village for orphans of HIV/AIDS, which aims to take the burden off grandmothers, who are frequently the main caretakers of an ever-growing number of these children.

Cyber Dialogues - Sixteen Days of Activism on Gender Violence

The cyber dialogues are one of several initiatives to raise awareness and change behaviour as part of the sixteen days of activism on gender violence using new information and communication technologies. The sixteen days is the period from 25 November, international day of no violence against women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day. This period is increasingly recognised in Southern Africa as an opportunity to conduct sustained campaigns against gender violence.

Children often seem helpless in the face of the onslaught of HIV/AIDS, but a South African network of NGOs helping children affected by the pandemic has recognised that they can play a proactive role in combating the disease.

The British fundraising NGO, Cruisaid, together with the Western Cape provincial government, recently launched a free HIV/AIDS treatment centre in the township of Gugulethu, near Cape Town, South Africa.

A US-backed programme is attempting to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS in Soweto, South Africa's largest township, with workshops aimed at altering men's views on relationships, sex and domestic violence.
