Sinakekele Children ?– Take Good Care of Us

February 2005. Adapted by the HIVAN Media Office.
Sinakekele Children is a ministry and Non-Profit Organisation concerned with caring for abandoned babies and children, many of whom are directly affected by HIV/AIDS.

Sinakekele currently houses four babies and is run from the Director, Ruth Grobler?’s, home in Parkhill, Durban North. Ruth recently resigned from a full-time career in Information Technology to focus on running Sinakekele and caring for the children. The organisation is in the process of securing larger premises.

The four children ?– ranging from a three-year old HIV-positive child, Siya, to a sprightly and increasingly athletic baby, Mary, who arrived extremely malnourished and whose condition has improved in leaps and bounds. Siya recently suffered from a severe case of Lactic Acidosis, a rare side-effect of ARVs. He is under the excellent care at the doctors of Sinikithemba clinic at McCords, and he has truly defied the odds, and kept his strong zest for life.

Sinakekele aims to see every abandoned baby given a loving home and a caring family. Operating on a Christian ethos, Sinakekele provides a loving environment for orphans and abandoned babies, actively contributes to the education and raising of these children and helps them to become confident and productive members of society. In caring for babies infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, Sinakekele offers short-term respite care (should a caregiver be hospitalized as a result of HIV/AIDS or other illness), interim care for orphans or abandoned babies whilst more permanent families are found and permanent care for children who have not been adopted by the age of three. They aim to run support groups for adoptive families in the community. A pre-school facility is also planned, and will be run by the organisation to provide children in the home, and those of child-headed households, with a sound educational foundation.

Sinakekele is in desperate need of help in terms of meeting their daily expenses and being able to secure larger premises. Should you wish to contribute to this organisation, please contact them on: Tel: +27 31 573 1153; Email: [email protected] or visit http://www.sinakekele.org.za
