Karen Michael and Nicola Deghaye, respectively, presented on these subjects.

Eleven of HIVAN€™s staff members attended the XV International AIDS Conference in bustling Bangkok during July 2004. The Conference hosted approximately 20000 delegates, featured many tracks and a varied cultural programme, all centred on the theme €œaccess for all€.


WCRP/HIVAN Forum - Building partnerships for HIV/AIDS management in KZN

HIVAN and the World Conference on Religion and Peace (WCRP) hosted the second in its 2004 series of day-long Capacity-building Workshops on 12 August at the Glenmore Pastoral Centre in Durban. The theme of the Workshop was €œBuilding Partnerships for HIV/AIDS Management in KZN€, and was facilitated by HIVAN€™s Community Responses research team.

South and North Coast Community HIV/AIDS Forum Series €“ September 2004

The September 2004 South and North Coast's HIV/AIDS Fora, hosted by HIVAN, were held at the Shallcross Community Hall in the South Coast and the Verulam Child and Family Welfare Society in the North Coast. The title for these fora was €œThe Dream Centre €“ Palliative Medical Care€.

A report-back from the XV International AIDS Conference in Bangkok was the order of the day at the Journal Club held on 3 September this year. Both Dr Ayesha Kharsany (STDs and Risk Behaviour) and Dr Myra Taylor (Reducing HIV infection among Adolescents) gave outstanding overviews of their areas of interest, covering both oral presentations and posters that were presented at the conference.


1st Health Economics Antiretroviral Roundtable

A group of southern African health economists and public health specialists involved in economic evaluations of antiretroviral therapy (ART) programmes met in Durban on 22nd September 2004. The meeting was organised by ECI KZN PLUS in collaboration with HEARD and the Harvard AIDS Institute. The aim of the meeting was to identify and discuss methodological issues related to economic evaluations of ART programmes and to identify priorities for health economics research, and particularly economic evaluations, in southern Africa.
