The November 2004 HIVAN/ECI HIV/AIDS Public Health Club featured presentations by Kezziah Mestry and Jens Wennberg.
Kezziah Mestry: Kezziah has been involved with research on HIV/AIDS amongst psychiatric patients since 1998.She has coordinated an HIV risk reduction program and a seroprevalence study at the Midlands Psychiatric Complex, a collaboration between the School of Psychology, Pietermaritzburg and the Joseph Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. In 2000 she participated in developing HIV Guidelines for use with psychiatric patients for the Mental Health Directorate. In 2003/2 she coordinated the development of an AIDS policy for the Midlands Psychiatric Complex. She is currently a researcher with the Risk and Protection study (School of Psychology, Pietermaritzburg) which examines the context of HIV risk and protection amongst socially marginalized populations. Kezziah presented on "Dual Taboos: Sexuality and Women with Severe Mental Illness in South Africa".
Jens Wennberg:Jens Wennberg is a Physician Assistant who had a primary care practice with HIV infected patients at Harlem Hospital in New York City. Since his retirement he has been teaching about HIV treatment in China, Uganda and South Africa. He is a volunteer visiting staff member at the Enhancing Care Initiative and Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine. He has presented posters at the International AIDS Conferences in Geneva 2000 and Barcelona 2002 and written articles for medical journals in South Africa and the U.S. Before entering medical school late in life, he had careers doing Metal-Cutting Research, as a Manufacturing Executive, and as a Designer-Craftsman. Jens presented on "The Application of Research Findings to Treatment", which was based on a paper by Prof HM Coovadia entitled "Antiretroviral Agents ? How Best to Protect Infants from HIV and Save Their Mothers from AIDS".
