The H.O.P.E. Foundation is a Christian faith-based organisation founded by Dr. Fred Roberts in 2000 as an outreach programme of the Durban Christian Centre Church. The HOPE Centre Foundation is an NPO incorporating a feeding scheme, a HOPE empowerment programme and HIV/AIDS clinic (Hope Centre).

Home-based care is likely to become the dominant form of AIDS treatment in South Africa. The overwhelming majority of people dealing with HIV/AIDS are doing so with extremely limited resources. It has become clear that an effective care strategy has to include instruction on dealing with the day-to-day requirements of patients without access to the latest medical supplies.

The final session of the 2003 series of WCRP-HIVAN Fora for faith-based organisations and HIV/AIDS researchers took place on 9 December, with Rabbi Michael Standfield, Professor Suzanne Leclerc-Madlala and Dr Shakira Cassim as guest speakers. Their respective presentations centred on positive approaches to dealing with the stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV/AIDS, and communicating for "Second Generation" HIV prevention measures.

February has been a busy month in the FBO sector, with a number of conferences, workshops and book launches. The PACSA (Pietermaritzburg Agency for Christian Social Awareness) Conference on HIV/AIDS, Gender and Poverty took place on 17 – 18th February. The conference gave voice to community-based practitioners, highlighted best practices, worked through challenges and called for a deeper commitment from Church and Government to the needs of those affect and infected in the province. A clear call was sounded to the Church to take a stand for HIV/AIDS.

A Capacity-building and Leadership Workshop was held from 16 to 18 February 2004 at the Tropicana Hotel in Durban. Co-hosted by the World Conference of Religion and Peace (WCRP) and the Islamic Medical Association (IMA), Southern African Forum Partners from Durban, Johannesburg, Port Shepstone, Namibia and Cape Town attended the workshop.
