It is time to stop looking at statistics and start acting against HIV/AIDS. This was the message of provincial Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize, speaking at a function at which R500 000 was donated to the Orphans of AIDS Trust by Standard Bank.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) today announced that it has further reduced the not-for-profit preferential prices of its HIV/AIDS medicines by up to 33% and its anti-malarial medicines by up to 38%.


Malawi AIDS awareness focuses on men at work

AIDS activists in Malawi have launched a new awareness programme that targets men at their workplaces. "We have been targeting women in a society where men make decisions. If you want to reach more men, you have to go to their workplaces," Jenni Mueller, the programme manager for Development Aid from People to People, told PlusNews.

Any company seeking to evaluate the extent of the HIV/AIDS threat must involve itself in the macabre mathematics of death. Those companies that have more foresight have grasped this nettle, and found the task less daunting than it might seem. This partly explains why companies such as Anglo American have taken up the treatment option.

The Minister of Health, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, was today the first South African to give a donation as part of this year's World AIDS Day campaign. South Africa's theme for World AIDS Day 2002 is "I care enough to help, do you?", and the main idea behind it builds on last year's theme: "I care enough to act" - aiming to ensure that the care and support elements in society are highlighted and broadened to include as wide a stakeholder contribution as possible.
