Prof Steve Reid from the Centre for Rural Health, UKZN, spoke on “Human Resources for Health in Underserved Areas? at the Journal Club held at the Nelson R Mandela Medical School on 12 May. This was an unusual presentation as it was not specifically focused on HIV and AIDS, but it dealt with human resources in the public sector which constrains the sector’s ability to deliver health services, including those related to HIV. “Why focus on human resources?? one might ask. Prof Reid stated that this issue was important for access to healthcare, quality of healthcare, equity in terms of the availability of health care to the population, and the impact or effectiveness of the care provided.

“Experiences in paediatric ART (antiretroviral treatment) in KwaZulu-Natal? was the subject of discussion at the April 2006 Journal Club meeting at the UKZN School of Medicine. First Dr Holly France gave an overview of the paediatric ART programme running at Ridge House, the antiretroviral (ARV) clinic attached to McCord Hospital. This was followed by a presentation from Dr Gurpreet Kindra on the Structured Treatment Interruption study that was carried out at King Edward IV Hospital.

Jacqui Hadingham and Deseree Archary from the UKZN Medical School presented the dismal truth about how vulnerable HIV-exposed but uninfected children are. For various reasons covered in their talk, not least of all because an HIV-infected caregiver cannot care as well for the child as he or she could if healthy, there are socio-economic, psychological and developmental implications for the child.

“How many South Africans are dying of AIDS? How good are the data?? was the title of Anneke Grobler’s discussion of the MRC Burden of Disease Report 2000 at June’s Journal Club. Because AIDS deaths are not accurately reported, the MRC used modeling and the ASSA model in their report.

Costing was the topic under discussion at the HIV/AIDS Journal Club hosted by HIVAN/ECI KZN PLUS on 6 May 2005. Christopher Browne talked about “The Costs of AIDS: How much do we know??, and Nicola Deghaye followed this with a presentation titled “Cost and cost-effectiveness of treating multidrug-resistant tuberculosis?.

The April 2005 HIVAN/ECI HIV/AIDS Public Health Jounral Club featured two presentations. Anna Coutsoudis, Associate Professor at the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, presented on "Adherence to optimal feeding practices and risk of postnatal transmission of HIV" and Xoliswa Keke, a Researcher with the Centre for HIV and AIDS Networking (HIVAN) presented on "Disclosure and HAART adherence: exploring the dynamics".

A report-back from the XV International AIDS Conference in Bangkok was the order of the day at the Journal Club held on 3 September this year. Both Dr Ayesha Kharsany (STDs and Risk Behaviour) and Dr Myra Taylor (Reducing HIV infection among Adolescents) gave outstanding overviews of their areas of interest, covering both oral presentations and posters that were presented at the conference.
