Zanele Hlatshwayo, the Deputy Mayor of Pietermaritzburg, could well have spent her days attending meetings, making pleasant speeches and keeping the peace. This would have been easier than trying to turn the tide of HIV/AIDS, which, by conservative estimates, has infected more than 10 000 people living within a short distance of Hlatshwayo's grand brick Victorian offices.

It is time to stop looking at statistics and start acting against HIV/AIDS. This was the message of provincial Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize, speaking at a function at which R500 000 was donated to the Orphans of AIDS Trust by Standard Bank.

In the first partnership of its kind, Formula One team Sauber Petronas has joined two United Nations institutions to bring HIV/AIDS awareness messages to a broader public and mobilize resources for HIV/AIDS projects in countries worst affected by the disease.

An HIV-positive muppet will soon join the cast of South Africa's "Takalani Sesame", a local television production of the children's educational programme, Sesame Street.


BESG Special Needs Housing Programme - a response to HIV/AIDS and vulnerability

In 2000, the Built Environment Support Group (BESG) based at the University's of Natal's Durban campus, together with the affiliates of the Urban Sector Network (USN) embarked on a USAID-funded programme to capacitate the sector around issues of HIV/AIDS and urban development. The programme became part of a broader process to formulate a comprehensive and integrative Special Needs housing programme for BESG.

KwaZulu Natal Traditional Leaders are strengthening the province's initiatives against HIV/AIDS and are joining three other provinces - Eastern Cape, Free State and the North West Province - that have already launched their provincial traditional leaders HIV/AIDS chapter.
