A group of eight South African and international NGOs are collaborating on a new programme to tackle the impact of HIV/AIDS on the education sector, after recent research showed that the pandemic was claiming the lives of 11 teachers daily.

As young people continue to bear the brunt of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, a pilot project in South Africa's province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is working with families to teach children how to reduce risky behaviour before they reach puberty.

Thousands of teachers have been lost to HIV/AIDS. An HSRC study has revealed the extent of the epidemic among educators and has called for 10 000 to be placed on anti-retroviral treatment with immediate effect.

The Three Amigos, a series of twenty (20) multi-award wining Public Service Announcements (PSAs) designed to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, have found a new home on SABC 2. Already playing on SABC 1 and 3, the PSAs are now going to be played on SABC 2 in Sotho and Afrikaans. The animated PSAs star three comedic animated characters to deliver a serious message encouraging the principle that condoms are our friends or amigos.
