Condomise, pupils advised

Ntokoza Mfusi. 31 January 2007. The Mercury. Republished courtesy of Independent Newspapers (Pty) Ltd.
Always keep condoms on you to protect yourself from contracting HIV in a rape or from sexual partners. This was writer and entertainer Pieter Dirk Uys?’ message to pupils at Northlands Girls?’ High School in Durban yesterday.

Addressing the pupils on HIV/AIDS issues, Uys said: ?“The best cure for HIV/AIDS is abstinence but, if you are having sex, condomise?”.

?”Find out as much as you can about the equipmet (condoms), that will help you stay safe. One mistake is all it takes to change your life forever.?”

Uys is on a tour of Durban schools giving HIV/AIDS talks in an effort to encourage young people to be more proactive in the war against HIV/AIDS.

He had the girls in stitches yesterday during sketches, dressed up as former Presidents, Nelson Mandela and PW Botha, and Anglican Archbishop, Desmond Tutu.

Karin Olivier, a school counselor, said the pupils had learnt much during Uys?’ talk, because counselors could not use words that would be considered appropriate during lessons on such issues.

Uys has been delivering HIV/AIDS talks at schools, free of charge, for the past five years.

He said delivering the talks had given him a new lease on life, because he was encouraging action and not just talking.
