Number of women living with HIV increases in each region of the world

A new report released today shows that the number of women living with HIV has risen in each region of the world over the past two years, with the steepest increases in East Asia, followed by Eastern Europe and Central Asia. In East Asia, there was a 56% increase over the past two years, followed by Eastern Europe and Central Asia with 48%.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal held an HIV/AIDS Research Showcase on 30th November 2004. Presentations and Panel discussions focused on the research agendas and programmes within the various schools, departments and faculties at the University, and emphasized the spirit of collaboration in terms of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

This research project explored how local churches integrate HIV/AIDS into the life and ministries of the church and how those directly affected by HIV/AIDS experience this integration.

The Mpondombili Project is a school-based project developed and implemented in Hlabisa in rural KwaZulu Natal. The project was carried out with the aim of promoting dual protection to reduce young peoples risk of becoming infected with HIV. Dual protection refers to the simultaneous protection from unwanted pregnancy and HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. The programme also aimed to change gender role norms and gender dynamics within relationships.

Thousands of teachers have been lost to HIV/AIDS. An HSRC study has revealed the extent of the epidemic among educators and has called for 10 000 to be placed on anti-retroviral treatment with immediate effect.
