The many faces of AIDS research in South Africa

Compiled by Liz Clarke (Sunday Tribune 28 July 2002) Republished courtesy of Independent Newspapers (Pty) Ltd
While activists fight for free or affordable anti-retroviral drugs for all who need them, it is the job of researchers to identify exactly who those patients are, and precisely how the treatment would best be administered.

This important aspect of AIDS research is just one undertaken by the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA). The organisation's brief is to investigate research suited to the local environment.

The team includes: Professor Salim Abdool Karim, a clinical epidemiologist of the University of KwaZulu-Natal; Director of the Centre Professor Carolyn Williamson, a virologist at the University of Cape Town; Professor Winston Hide, a bio-informatics expert at the University of the Western Cape; Professor Lynn Morris (a virologist), Dr Clive Gray (an immunologist) and Dr Adrian Puren (a geneticist) at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases in Johannesburg; Professor Maila Matjila (Community Health physician and Deputy Dean), Professor Umesh Lalloo (Infectious Diseases physician), Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim (an epidemiologist) and Professor Sharon Cassol (a virologist) all of the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of KwaZulu-Natal; Professor Brian Williams (an epidemiologist at the World Health Organisation).
