The 2006 antenatal survey was conducted to estimate the prevalence of HIV infection the antenatal survey was conducted in all nine provinces using the standard unlinked anonymous methodology (WHO/UNAIDS). To enhance the sensitivity of the estimates and to provide greater robustness the HIV sample size was expanded in 2006 to provide (for the first time) prevalence estimates for each district in the country in addition to the national and provincial rates. A total of 33033 women participated from 1415 health facilities (in comparison to 16510 participants in 2005).

A recent survey of clothing companies in KwaZulu-Natal revealed that HIV/AIDS is having a serious affect and effect on this industrial sector. Even though the study is exploratory and does not go into details the results of the survey warrants further investigation.

For years, there has been a battle over the best way to protect babies born to HIV positive mothers living in poor areas from getting the virus – which has essentially boiled down to a battle between those who advocate breast feeding and those who advocate bottle-feeding with milk formula.

A survey has revealed that 14 television and radio programmes and four print media campaigns to raise HIV/AIDS awareness have had a "very profound" effect on people's attitude and behaviour.
