More than 4 000 South African teachers died of HIV/AIDS-related complications last year, while 45 000 more - 12,7 percent of the teacher workforce - are HIV-positive.

A group of eight South African and international NGOs are collaborating on a new programme to tackle the impact of HIV/AIDS on the education sector, after recent research showed that the pandemic was claiming the lives of 11 teachers daily.

Already playing on SABC 1 and 3, the PSA’s are now going to be played on SABC 2 in Sotho and Afrikaans. The animated PSA’s star three comedic animated characters to deliver a serious message encouraging the principle that condoms are our friends or amigos.

As young people continue to bear the brunt of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, a pilot project in South Africa's province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is working with families to teach children how to reduce risky behaviour before they reach puberty.
