Description: The JEAPP Programme was initiated in late 2000 following the Durban AIDS Conference after which it became apparent that there was a dearth of information on the economic impact of HIV/AIDS in the context of Southern Africa. The original objective of the Programme was to move from simply describing the impact of the epidemic to quantifying and analysing the impact of HIV/AIDS at the individual, household and community levels as well as its impact on specific sectors within the South African economy. It sought to move from anecdotes to evidence based on substantive research. The Programme has continued to support research on the non-epidemiological aspects of the social and economic impact of HIV/AIDS on the South African economy as well as its peoples at the macro and micro levels. Research conducted so far has provided critical knowledge to direct policy and more focused studies to address the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
