Campaign News and Resources
A circle of giving: Community Outreach volunteers attached to HIVAN?s Campus HIV/AIDS Support Unit at the University of KwaZulu-Natal?s Howard College campus held a fundraising event over two days in May 2005. Over R1 500 was collected from the sale of raffle tickets for patients and families at McCord Hospital?s Sinikithemba Care Centre, and more than 15 bags of clothing were donated to the Hillcrest AIDS Trust Centre for their income-generation scheme. The lucky draw held on 11 and 12 May offered prizes that included meal vouchers for the Wimpy and Spur Restaurants? Davenport outlets, SunCoast Nu-Metro movie tickets, CDs from Musica, wine from Queensmead Spar and a toaster from Knowles Spar, East Coast Radio T-shirts, a sports-bag from Standard Bank and books from HIVAN.
The Campus HIV/AIDS Support Unit serves as a drop-off and redistribution point for anyone wishing to donate clothing at any time, and fundraising events are ongoing. Contact the Unit at (031) 260 2511.
?You, Me & HIV? / ?Wena, Nami & HIV?
This book is an excellent update on the 2002 guide ?Staying Alive ? Fighting HIV/AIDS?, developed from an original concept by Professor Siamon Gordon of Oxford University. The appealing full-colour images are designed to help children understand what the virus is, how it works in the body and to confirm facts about transmission and infection prevention, and are also helpful for adults. Using feedback and advice on the first book, invited from children, teachers, parents, health workers and those living with HIV, a new version is now available with a companion in isiZulu, as well as an English learning package consisting of posters and an ?Educator?s Guide?. The posters are entitled ?How Does HIV Make People Ill?? and ?Protect Yourself From HIV?. These teaching guidelines explain the scientific process of infection and offer the social and personal skills needed to help people cope with the presence of HIV/AIDS in their lives and in their communities. The book opens with a message to learners from Zackie Achmat. ?Soul of Africa? shoes: Financed by concerned British and South African businesspeople in the footwear industry, unemployed women in settlements around KwaZulu-Natal have been trained to hand-stitch this comfortable, stylish shoe, enabling them to feed their families. For each pair of Soul of Africa shoes sold, R30 to R40 is donated to establish and run programmes and facilities for the care and schooling of children orphaned by AIDS. The shoes are available in a range of colours and stocked in Froggie and Clarks outlets. Planning the Future: A Booklet for Families and Communities: JSI (John Snow International) Europe and SAfAIDS (Southern African HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service) offer this new booklet to infected and affected family members and helpers while the family is still in a position to plan for the future. The booklet covers processes of care for children, beginning at the time of parents? diagnosis or illness, through their death and during orphanhood. It advises on disclosing HIV status to children, appointing standby guardians, creating ?memories?, inheritance laws, writing wills and transferring property, accessing social services, and obtaining key legal documents.? While much of the information is specific to Zimbabwe, the general guidelines can be useful anywhere for children affected by AIDS.
