World AIDS Day collection for iThemba Lethu Transition Home
In recognition of World AIDS Day, the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Durban Campus HIV/AIDS Support Unit hosted a money-drive to raise funds for the iThemba Lethu Transition Home. The UND branch of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) joined in with an information table alongside the collection point outside the main library.
iThemba Lethu is a voluntary association, established in November 2000, and the Transition Home is located in Cato Manor, Durban, providing a temporary home for babies either abandoned by HIV-positive parents or orphaned by the epidemic. The organisation has a Christian base, rooted in Glenridge Church International in Durban. While the children are in the Transition Home, they are protected, loved and prayed for, as the caregivers have a vision for them being healed of trauma. Any medical conditions presented are treated, and the children are educated as appropriate for their age.
iThemba Lethu helps these children regain a meaningful destiny by recognising the value of their lives and their spiritual inheritance, and being part of a secure family or relationships. The Home can take up to six children at a time into their care, from newborn to 18 months old. As soon as children arrive at the Home, a process of foster placement begins.
The Campus HIV/AIDS Support Unit team thanks all those University students and staff who donated money for this worthy cause and so helped to give hope to the children of iThemba Lethu. A grand total of R643-96 was raised.
