Umcebo Trust opens annual exhibition

Catherine Jenkin. HIVAN Communications, Arts and Advocacy Unit. 09 December 2005.
The Umcebo Trust opened it?’s annual exhibition, entitled Ukukhanya (meaning ?‘shine?’), at the Durban Art Gallery on 07 December 2005.

The exhibition was opened by Carol Brown, Director of the Durban Art Gallery, who introduced various invited dignitaries, including Mr MB Nguni, of the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism; Pastor GB Dlamini, of the Ethekwini Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism and Muhle Ngcobo, Principal of Sinethemba Children?’s Shelter.

Carol expressed the Gallery?’s great pride in hosting the Umcebo Exhibition and emphasized the partnerships that the Trust has developed with a variety of institutions, which has led to the creation of the meaningful and beautiful arts and crafts.

Umcebo Trust partners with Sinethemba Children?’s Shelter and St Raphael?’s school, in order to enable the learners within these institutions to garner artistic skills, and thereby economically empowering them. The Trust also uses art as therapy to assist the learners in their rehabilitation and in terms of helping them express emotions relating to problems in their lives ?– these range from HIV/AIDS to poverty and learning disabilities.

Mr Nguni spoke about the lack of resources allocated to artistic initiatives in KwaZulu-Natal but expressed his pride and gratitude to Umcebo Trust for producing such excellent work.

Pastor Dlamini spoke on Umcebo?’s ability and potential to empower people, as individuals and in that way, to uplift entire communities.

Muhle Ngcobo elaborated on Sinethemba?’s partnership with Umcebo and her hopes that the Trust would go on to develop into a full-time project.

The Umcebo Trust is selling all works displayed at the exhibition, and the exhibition runs until 29 January 2006. For more information on the Trust, please visit: http://home.telkomsa.net/tabby/ or contact the Director, Robin Opperman on [email protected] or on 083 7933 408.
