Babiza?’s Story author honoured by the University of Colorado

Adapted by HIVAN's Communications, Arts and Advocacy Unit from a statement by Jill Kruger. 01 December 2005.
On 30 November 2005, at the Umhlali Primary School prizegiving, 10 year old Siphelele Ndlovu was presented with a framed, special certificate from the University of Colorado's Children, Youth and Environments Journal division.

This presentation is to acknowledge the wide impact of his published personal story, "Babiza's Story" - published exactly a year ago - on thousands of children and adults. 5,000 copies of Babiza's Story were published (with parallel English and isi-Zulu text) and his story is read by children, grannies, doctors, teenagers and parents.

This young philosopher learnt to look at the world through new eyes when he found his mum was HIV positive and he delivers shrewd comment on the phenomenon of HIV, including the position of men. Siphelele illustrated his story as well.

He told his story because there are so many parents and caretakers in South Africa who are not disclosing their HIV status to children and he believes that it is important that they should. He also believes that it is important that children should realise that parents are not going to drop dead as soon as they become HIV positive and that parents should understand that their children want to help and support them.

Siphelele's mother is alive and well although she is HIV positive. She became an HIV/AIDS counsellor after learning that she was HIV positive.

Babiza's Story was undertaken as a collaborative project between UNESCO (GUIC SA), HIVAN (HIV and AIDS Networking) UKZN, and MIET Africa and directed by Jill Kruger.
