Delivering a keynote address during a breakfast briefing to update stakeholders on the preparations for the commemoration of World AIDS Day, which will take place in Durban this year, Dr Sandile Buthelezi said each year there were more and more HIV infections.
"More new HIV infections, shows that people either aren't learning the message about the dangers of HIV/AIDS, or are unable or unwilling to act on it.
"It is the responsibility of all of us to re-enforce new ways that will drastically reduce new HIV infections, especially among the youth," he said.
The function was held to outline the preparations for the World AIDS Day event which will be held at Durban's Kings Park Stadium on December 1.
In December it will be exactly 24 years since the HIV virus was first discovered in the United States, and the countries of the world will be celebrating the World AIDS Day for the 17th year.
The commemoration event is expected to be attended by thousands of people from all nine provinces. Buthelezi said they would embark on a campaign to encourage people to make pledges. This will be done to encourage people to commit themselves in the fight against HIV/AIDS by doing HIV tests.
People are also expected to make pledges to take care of orphans and other vulnerable children. This will be done in the run-up to the event.
Khomanani national programme manager Cyril Sadiki said he was concerned about the low numbers of men who were visiting the voluntary counselling and testing centres. "We encourage men to be more responsible and start checking their status," he said.
