Fiona Kirkwood, a renowned South African artist was recently awarded one of three first prize in the category of "Place" at the recent Kaunas Art Biennial Textile Conference 2005, held in Kaunas, Lithuania.
Fiona's installation was based on her involvement with HIV/AIDS and Survival. This includes the Tangencya initiative, on which HIVAN partnered with Fiona. Over the 2004 festive season, the HIVAN team interacted with the Tangencya project, linking our community-based partners (including Lifeline, MRC, Durban Gay and Lesbian Society and the Hillcrest AIDS Centre) with Survival, a fringe installation by Fiona. The installation was especially created for HIVAN's Artists' Action Around AIDS exhibition, as shown at the Durban Art Gallery (2003, Tatham Art Gallery (2004) and the Africa Centre (2004).
Exhibited at the Workshop, the installation attracted about 8 000 people, whose reactions and comments to the link between condoms, HIV/AIDS and survival, were documented audio-visually and in writing. HIVAN's networking team and associates supported the exhibition through daily information-sharing activities (including screening of Deadly Myths?). The partners took stride in the New Year with a "Walk for Survival", which culminated in a candle light ceremony.
