A candlelight vigil at the weekend remembered South African police officers who died from AIDS-related illnesses.
During the annual memorial service, held west of the capital, Pretoria, National Deputy Police Commissioner Malay Singh urged all members of the service to support the government's efforts to alleviate the impact of the pandemic on those living with or affected by the disease.
The government news agency, BuaNews, quoted Singh as saying: "As the police service, we have to do much to combat HIV/AIDS."
According to a survey conducted in 1999, eight percent of police service personnel were living with the disease, a figure predicted to increase to 20 percent by 2015. The group most affected were officers aged between 25 and 34.
